A glittering, high quality occasion, with attendees including key decision makers from across the Middle East and the Indian Subcontinent, The Maritime Standard Awards recognise the achievements of the industry’s most outstanding performers and celebrate and reward their successes. Despite being launched only three years ago, The Maritime Standard (TMS) Awards has earned the right to be referred to as the region’s premiere shipping and maritime awards event. The first three events, held in November 2014 and 2015, and October 2016, all received the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum and were held at the prestigious Atlantis Ballroom, on The Palm.
For the inaugural event in 2014 PR guru, journalist and writer Alastair Campbell performed as master of ceremonies, while in 2015 Dutch soccer legend, Ruud Gullit compered the event. Last year former CNN news anchor, Jim Clancy, was on stage to lead proceedings. On all three occasions the Awards attracted over 600 of the region’s elite decision makers including chairmen, chief executives and directors from all of the leading shipping companies, ports, terminal operators and maritime companies and organisations. The 2016 Awards were notable for some high profile presentations.
In addition to the awards determined by the judging panel, there were 7 special awards presented by the TMS team for particularly impressive individual achievements. The Maritime Standard Lifetime Achievement Award was presented to Dr. Abdullatif A. Sultan, chairman of the Organisation of Islamic Shipping Associations; The Hall of Fame Award was given to Khamis Juma Buamim, managing director & group chief executive of Gulf Navigation; The Personality of the Year Award went to Yasser Nasr Zaghloul; chief executive of National Marine Dredging Company; and the Editor’s Choice Award was presented to H.E. Shaikh Daij bin Salman Al Khalifa, chairman of ASRY.
Other awards selected by The Maritime Standard included Rajiv Agarwal, of Essar Ports, won the Excellence Award in recognition of his work in the Indian ports sector, and Abu Dhabi Ports scooped the Deal of the Year for the awarding of a multi-million dollar contract to National Marine Dredging Company to enable the development of a second container terminal at Khalifa port.
The 4th Annual Maritime Standard Awards will be held on Monday, 23rd October 2017, once again in the opulent setting of The Ballroom, at the Atlantis The Palm. Building on the achievements of the first three Awards, this year promises to be bigger and better still, with as many as 800 guests likely to attend. All the top names and personalities from the ports, shipping and related industries will be there, providing unrivalled opportunities for networking, and generating business opportunities over the months to come. As well as the winners of the various award categories, chosen by an elite, and highly experienced independent judging panel, there will once again be a few, very special awards presented by The Maritime Standard team for outstanding individual contributions. In total some 30 awards will be up for grabs on the night. The Maritime Standard Awards offer the industry a high profile, and glittering stage on which to highlight its many achievements. Now that it is firmly established, The Maritime Standard Awards’ ability to raise the profile of the maritime sector in the region is unique.
